Legal Resources for LGBTIQA+ Community Members
On July 2, 2009, Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar of the Delhi High Court transformed the lives of India’s LGBT citizens by reading down Sec 377 of the Indian constitution. Their judgement decriminalized same-sex acts in private between consenting adults. This reprieve lasted us four years, until the verdict was overthrown by the Supreme Court of India in the Koushal 11-12-13 verdict. As of mid-2018, India awaits the results of the constitutional challenge to the Koushal verdict, which at the same time struggling to ensure the landmark NALSA verdict of 2014 is implemented in its entirety.
